The Evening of Champions is hosted annually by the Greater Raleigh Sports Council to celebrate the Triangle's professional and amateur teams, athletes, special events, and fans. Jenna Hinton, Assistant Director and Head Coach of Triangle 14 Black was selected to receive the John Freehaler Sports Volunteer of the Year award. Hinton was recognized for her service to youth and, in particular, the disabled population. Over the last several years Hinton has spearheaded Triangle's partnership with Bridge II Sports to promote and offer sitting volleyball [a paralympic sport], create a adaptive sport chair for disabled, and assisted with the hosting of the Southeast Valor Games.
Since 2003 Triangle has hosted a club wide retreat day. The day is devoted to team pictures and team and club building activities. This year Triangle's 270 student-athletes spent their time painting jump boxes, writing letters and hanging out with their Big/Little brothers and sisters. To cap off the event a panel of Triangle's senior class answered questions for younger athletes and reflected on their experience at Triangle. Many thanks to all our volunteers and Coach Jenna Hinton for putting the day together.
Ten Triangle teams, 14-18 Black and Blue, traveled to Hampton, VA for the first MAPL event of the 2014 season. MAPL is unique in several ways. First, it is mixed age division competition [two divisions with 54 teams each] designed to bring the very best teams on the eastern seaboard together, under one roof, to play tough competition. Second, it is power pooled; every match is competitive unlike other multi-day events where seeding can make first day/wave matches less challenging. Triangle had an excellent showing capturing 1st, 2nd, 9th, T11, and T13 in the BLACK division [18 Black, 17 Black, 18 Blue, 16 Black, 17 Blue] and 3rd, T11, T19, 32, and T41 in the BLUE division [16 Blue, 15 Black, 15 Blue, 14 Black and 14 Blue].
Richmond, VA - Twenty Triangle teams competed in the first travel trip of the season, Richmond's Monument City Classic.
