Hutchens is an avid volleyball enthusiast, former beach and indoor player, and dedicated coach. He was introduced to the sport while attending NC State and went on to compete for over a decade at the AA/Open adult indoor level with USA Volleyball/Carolina Region. Equally passionate about the outdoor game, Hutchens played both grass and beach volleyball at the AA/Open level. Over his playing career, he competed as a middle blocker, opposite, and setter.
His coaching experience spans a wide range of settings and levels. Hutchens has coached club volleyball with NC Unlimited and NC Kat, working primarily with high school-aged athletes. He has also contributed to high school programs at Cleveland, Clayton, and Northwood High Schools, and more recently provided technical coaching support for the NC State Women’s Club team. In Fall 2023, he will join the Green Level High School coaching staff.
Hutchens earned his degree in Civil Engineering from NC State and is a licensed Professional Engineer (PE). He currently serves as Regional Manager for Weston and Sampson. He and his wife live in Apex with their three children.
