Richard Tharrington

Tharrington joined Triangle in 2013 and has coaching experience at the youth developmental, high school and club levels. He has coached in the 11s-14s age groups as a head and resource coach and has been highly successful in both Carolina Region and interregional competition. In addition, he has led and assisted numerous camps and clinics, including Triangle's Youth Volleyball Program (YVP). Most recently, Tharrington served as the head coach of Triangle's first-ever 14 Navy team in 2020, a fourth national team in the age group, and helped lead them to three top 5 finishes in national tournaments prior to the season ending before qualifiers. In 2019, he coached 13 White to a second place finish at the Capitol Hill Classic and a T5 [out of 86 teams] finish in the 13 American division at the Big South National Qualifier.

He serves as the JV volleyball coach at Apex High School in Apex and holds a Master's degree in coaching education and sports science from Ohio University. He and his wife reside in Cary and have three children, Lauren (Triangle Class of 2016), Caden, and Joshua.



  • Tharrington led 2020 Triangle 14 Navy to a top five finish at the City of Oaks Challenge and MAPL Raleigh Red Division [13s-14s], and a second place finish at the Capitol Hill Classic.
  • Guided his 2019 13 White team to a second place finish at the Capitol Hill Classic and coached three individual award winners [Best Server, Best Receiver, Best Setter] at the event.
  • Reached the quarterfinals of the 2019 Big South National Qualifier [T5 finish out of 86 teams] with 13 White.
