Richard Tharrington

Tharrington joined Triangle in 2013 and has coaching experience at the high school (Apex HS, Cardinal Gibbons and NRCA), club, and youth development levels. He has head coached in the 13s and 14s age groups where he has been highly successful in both national and regional-based competition. Tharrington is a major contributor to Triangle's summer camp program, leading numerous camps and clinics and specializing in youth skills development. He holds a Master's degree in Coaching Education and Sports Science from Ohio University and a Bachelor’s degree from North Carolina State University in Electrical Engineering. He is a North Carolina native residing in Cary and has three children, Lauren (Triangle Class of 2016), Caden, and Joshua.

SIGNIFICANT COACHING ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

  • 2023 Triangle 13 Blue - 1st place finish JVA Charm City Baltimore, Top 10 finish Capitol Hill Classic in open division.
  • 2022 Triangle 13 Blue - 2nd place finish in the Carolina Region. 
  • 2020 Triangle 14 Navy - 2nd place finish at the Capitol Hill Classic, Top five finish at the City of Oaks Challenge and MAPL Raleigh Red Division [13s-14s].
  • 2019 Triangle 13 White - 2nd place finish at the Capitol Hill Classic and coached three individual award winners [Best Server, Best Receiver, Best Setter] at the event.
  • 2018 Triangle 13 White - Quarterfinals of the 2019 Big South National Qualifier [5th out of 86 teams].
