Student-Athletes Honored at End of Season Celebration
Morrisville, NC, June 10, 2014: On Tuesday, June 10th Triangle Volleyball Club’s student-athletes, families, and staff gathered to celebrate the accomplishments of the 2014 season at its annual End of Season celebration.
Triangle’s twenty-seven teams, 11 & under through 18 & under, have achieved a season winning percentage of 61% after competing in nearly 1300 matches prior to national championships. Sixteen teams will compete in AAU Girls’ Junior National Championships in June in Orlando.
Notable accomplishments of the 2014 season include:
The 2014 season began with a physical expansion of Triangle’s dedicated volleyball facility in Morrisville, NC. With a total of seven courts Triangle was able to add its first-ever boys team, promote White teams at 14-16 to national team status, form its largest group of 12 & unders [including one 11 & under team], and add additional teams from 13-16’s.
Two Triangle teams won Carolina Region Championships [16 White and 14 Silver] bringing the twelve year total to 40.
Triangle teams embarked on their toughest competition schedule to date with teams participating in 102 interregional events. Those events had teams competing in numerous cities including Minneapolis, Dallas, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Chicago and DC. In total Triangle teams earned 49 top 10 finishes in interregional events.
Twenty teams competed in one or more national qualifying events. In 37 qualifier appearances Triangle teams earned fifteen Top 10 finishes, including six (6) at the elite Open level. The 2014 qualifier performance marks the best in Triangle’s history.
Triangle’s court performance in terms of win percentage shows great consistency and depth across age levels 12-18 and within a given age level Black to Steel.
Two Triangle coaches earned notable honors this club season. Robin Bugg was selected by USA Volleyball as the Outstanding Female Coach. Jenna Hinton received the John Freehafer Volunteer of the Year award at the Greater Raleigh Sports Council’s Evening of Champions.
Triangle hosted its fifth annual MAPL Raleigh, an elite level tournament held at the Raleigh Convention Center. This season’s MAPL event was the largest yet with 156 participating teams.
Service continues to be an integral part of Triangle’s mission. In addition to our continued work with those with physical differences through sitting volleyball, adaptive sports camps, and the Valor Games we are sending athletes and coaches on a mission trip to Costa Rica with Courts for Kids.
The twenty-three members of the Class of 2014 have a collective participation at Triangle of 95 years and their efforts on the court and in the classroom have garnered them over $2.1 million in athletic and academic scholarships. In total, Triangle’s 141 alumnae have earned an excess of $10 million in total scholarship awards. Graduating student-athletes will continue their education and volleyball careers at multiple colleges and universities.
